What is a Servo Stabilizer?

In the simplest terms, Servo Stabilizer is an advanced electronic controlled servo motor that is used to govern a motorized variable transformer. A servomotor is a rotary or linear actuator that allows precise control of angular or linear position, velocity and acceleration. Based on this concept, it consists of a suitable motor-coupled to a sensor for position feedback and in transformers this concept is used to correct voltage fluctuation.

Mechanism

The Servo stabilizer has an automatic voltage regulator, which receives voltage from the main at input is continuously sensed by accessories circuitry, and gives feedback to main control circuitry by the help of a microprocessor. The microprocessor continuously receives values of input voltages and whenever there is high or low voltage at input of automatic voltage regulator, the microprocessor triggers the motor driver.

Stabilizers perform the function of voltage regulation – adjusting from over voltage and under voltage conditions. The process of increasing voltage from under voltage condition is called as boost operation, whereas reducing the voltage from overvoltage condition is called as buck operations.

Whenever the motor operates the autotransformer, appropriate voltage is supplied to the primary of the buck-boost transformer and hence corresponding secondary voltage corrects the supply voltage to the load. In cases, when the control circuit finds the output voltage higher than a reference voltage, it feeds the positive signal to the servo motor controller and hence the arm rotates till the two voltages are equal. Similarly, when output voltage falls below the reference value, a negative signal goes to the servo motor andthe arm rotates the contact in other direction and reduces voltage. Servo stabilizers can produce output regulation of ±0.5% with high efficiency about 98%.This process takes place continuously to correct input voltages.
